Shopping Uruk-Hai Sunday, August 11th
Walking through a department store of a mall yesterday, I ran into Lurtz.

In Burbank, a place where I'm sure things both old and foul are abundant, is where I had this encounter. As I navigated the path toward the exit down the escalator, I spotted this familiar tall, dark man who sported a pair of shades. Is that who I think it is? Is that Lawrence Makoare? Well, there wasn’t much room for doubt since I saw that Gino Acevedo of WETA next to him as well, along with a few female companions. And let's face it, there aren't very many people that look like Lawrence, not around Burbank anyway. “Hey! That’s Lawrence!” I exclaimed to my brothers. “Who?” was the response I got. OK so ‘Lawrence’ is a little vague. Surely they remember the menacing Uruk-hai from The Fellowship of the Ring? “You know, Lurtz?”

“Who?”

My very first thought at any rate was “what are they doing here?” Nothing against this particular mall, but there are more spectacular malls in Los Angeles. My best guess is that Gino lives or used to live somewhere around here, but I suppose it doesn't really matter. The fact that I met the two guys a week ago at Comic-Con made this all the more bizarre.

I went up to them for a bit of a chat. “Hey Lawrence”. They greeted me with handshakes. I told the men that I met them at Comic-Con, to which they replied “ah great!”. I told Gino I was the kid who bugged him for an autograph Saturday, right before the end of the convention day. “Oh I remember you yeah.” I’m not sure how many people asked Mr. Acevedo for an autograph at Comic-Con, but I was certainly one of them. It really seems as though they had a blast there. I asked if they were still taking a break from the hectic Lord of the Rings production to which Gino replied with a smile “we fly back tonight, I have to get back to work on Gollum.” Yessss…

I had wanted to ask Lawrence about getting the gig as the Witch King in The Return of the King, which I had forgotten to do at Comic-Con. No need, the conversation naturally took its course there as we were talking about work yet to be done on LOTR. “Congratulations! I had read that you got the Witch King part on TheOneRing.net!” and gave him a thumbs up. He thanked me. At the mention of TORN, he recalled “Oh yeah! We’ve been doing a bit of chatting too online”. I told him “the consensus from all the accounts online were that you and Sala were way too nice to be bad guys!” which prompted a big roaring laugh from Lawrence.

Gino asked if I had been at Comic-Con for all four days, I told them I was only there Thursday and Saturday. Lawrence asked if I had caught the New Line presentation, to which I answered “no, I wish I did, but I was in line at the time to catch Dominic’s last session, since I got there kinda late”. They asked if I did get to meet him, I nodded and said, “yeah he’s a good guy.” They seemed to agree.

We had talked for a minute or two at this point, and I figured I should let them enjoy their time off, but not before asking “are you guys coming back for Comic-Con next year?” Gino shrugged without much hesitation, “oh yeah definitely, they’re already talking with us about that.” I think I said something pretty trivial in response like “awesome” (a word I probably used about 25 times during this conversation). I told them at this point that I did not wish to hold them up any longer, and shook their hands again. “See you next year!” they said. Off I went to the beach.
